Are you eager to be cheered on by enthusiastic crowds in stunning mountainous settings? The Valmalenco Ultra Distance Trail, a long-distance race carved through the mountains straddling the Italy-Switzerland border, is now accepting registrations for its 7th edition, set for Saturday, July 26, and Sunday, July 27. This technically demanding race has captured the hearts of many Italian trail runners thanks to its spectacular routes and the enthusiastic support from its spectators, and is now poised to attract international participants.
The winning formula remains unchanged. The flagship distance of 90 km (6,000m d+) under the shadow of Pizzo Bernina (the easternmost 4000m peak of the Alps) is firmly confirmed. This route will pass no fewer than 15 refuges, with four ascents over 2,600m. Due to the course's challenging nature, which alternates between smooth, runnable sections and demanding alpine terrain, the maximum number of participants will be capped at 300. The shorter but equally thrilling 35 km sibling (2700 md+) is also confirmed, especially after the 2023 modifications, which received unanimous praise from competitors. For this race, 400 bibs will be available.
For those who might find the 90 km VUT daunting, the main event can be tackled as a three-person relay. But it's more than just a competition. For younger enthusiasts, the Mini-VUT is a must-try: a non-competitive walk along the trails connecting the villages of Lanzada and Caspoggio, designed for children and teenagers. As always, a blend of sports, local flavors, nature, philanthropy, and stadium-like cheers even at high altitudes will be the key ingredients of an event that not only pleases but also aims to become a true international happening.
