This regulation is temporary, it will be updated following the evolution of the epidemiological emergency, in compliance with the health regulations that will be in force on the day of the race.
The main version of this regulation is the italian version.
The 100 Miglia del Bernina (VUT160K) is a technical and physically demanding race, reserved exclusively for athletes who have already participated in races with similar lengths and differences in height.
The course will be partially marked and the race will take place in semi-self-sufficiency. Competitors must run in complete autonomy between life bases and partner shelters.
The course takes place largely at high altitudes and involves technical passages, an excellent knowledge of the mountain environment is required and the athlete must have the mandatory equipment with him throughout the race.
Some passages can present objective dangers: steep slopes, risk of falling stones, narrow and exposed paths, crossing of landslides and snowfields, absence of paths or visible traces. The athlete will be equipped with a GPS tracker provided by the organization and must have his own phone with him on which he will need to memorize the emergency number that will be given to him before the race. The athlete will also report their telephone number to the organization.
The athlete must have excellent orientation skills, and must be able to face difficult natural conditions, as well as being able to provide support and assistance in the event of injury to other competitors awaiting the arrival of the organization or rescue personnel.
Art. 1 ORGANIZATION
On Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 July, the amateur sports association VUT organizes the first edition of the “100 miles of Bernina - VUT 160k”, a semi-self-sufficient mountain race with an alpine route.
Art. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION
The 100 Mile del Bernina is a walking race on mountain paths, of about 160 km and 12,000 meters of elevation gain, starting from Sondrio and arriving in Caspolte in a maximum time of 60 hours.
The organization is affiliated with the CSEN sports promotion body.
The VUT 160K is an individual race, with a maximum number of 100 participants.
The route is to be covered in semi-self-sufficiency.
The Organization provides the following services to athletes:
- life bases open 24/24 (Torre S.Maria - Chiareggio - Zoia), where competitors can sleep and eat for free
- partner refuges, open 24/24 (Torre S. Maria - Chiareggio - Zoia), where competitors can take advantage of beds (free, and depending on the available places) and meals, upon presentation of a meal voucher provided by the organization (2 per competitor). Bed time occupancy may be limited in case of high attendance.
- the services offered by the other non-partner shelters are the responsibility of the competitors, respecting the shelter timetables and respecting the other users.
Assistance is permitted only in the life bases of the Organization. It is absolutely forbidden at any other point of the route, including partner refuges, towns or roads, on pain of immediate disqualification.
No accompaniment is allowed during the route (except the kilometer preceding and following the life base).
Art. 3 PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
Proven experience in the mountains is required for participation in the race, no dizziness, excellent training, having suitable clothing with you at a temperature that can range from -5 to +30 degrees and in adverse weather conditions. Upon enrollment, the athlete must provide a personal sports curriculum that demonstrates experience in long-distance mountain racing. The participating athlete must be fully aware of the environmental context in which the competition takes place and the technical difficulties of the race track.
Art. 4 REGISTRATION
a) Registration requirements
Athletes who are eighteen years old on the day of departure, in possession of a sports medical certificate for competitive activity (see art. 5), valid at least until the day of the race, can register. Athletes who are serving suspensions for the use of doping substances will not be accepted.
The event is open to all adult athletes in good standing for the current year with a membership for a sports promotion body (Csen, Csi, Uisp, Libertas ...) or Fidal or to holders of Mountain & Trail RunCard or RunCard.
Anyone without a membership card (but with a valid medical-sports visit) can sign the CSEN card at an additional cost of € 10. All competitors must still be in possession of a fitness examination for athletics valid on the day of the competition (medical examinations indicating other sports, eg football, cycling, skiing… will not be considered valid).
Foreign athletes will be able to participate in the competition if already registered with their athletics federation. Otherwise, for insurance reasons, they will have to sign the CSEN card when collecting the bib, at an additional cost of 10 euros, producing a copy of their medical examination of fitness to practice sport or, if foreigners, self-certifying their possession in accordance with current Italian legislation.
Copy of the valid medical certificate or substitute declaration, if not delivered at the time of registration must be delivered to the bib collection together with the signed declaration of responsibility (you will find it at the bib collection)
b) How to enroll
Registrations will open on February 15, 2021 and will close on July 12, 2021, unless the maximum number of members is reached, equal to 100.
Those who are not deemed eligible to participate will receive an e-mail from the organization.
c) Registration fees
120.00 euros for those enrolled from February 15th to March 15th 2021, after this date the fee goes to 160.00 euros.
The registration fee includes:
- Race pack with gadgets and products
- Gadget for finisher
- Race bib
- Refreshments along the route
- 1:25 000 scale maps + the roadbook of the itinerary
- Hot meals and dorms in life bases
- Beds (compatibly with the places available) in the partner refuges
- 2 meal vouchers to be used in partner shelters
- Post-race meal
d) Method of payment
The registration fee must be paid by credit card or bank transfer, according to the methods indicated on the endu website.
e) Cancellation
In case of inability to participate, the request for cancellation of the registration must be communicated by e-mail to registrations@ultravalmalenco.com.
The following reimbursement methods are envisaged:
- refund of 50% of the fee if the cancellation is requested by 1 July
- no refund if cancellation is requested after 1 July
The reimbursement of the fee will be made within one month from the end of the race.
The transfer of the bib may be authorized - at the discretion of the race direction - up to one week before the event, upon payment of 10 euros for secretarial expenses.
It is not allowed:
- the postponement of the registration fee to the following year. The 2021 registrations of all those who have accepted will be held valid.
In case of cancellation of the race due to force majeure, no refund will be due to the participants.
Art. 5 MEDICAL CERTIFICATION
Italian athletes (including those residing abroad) must send a copy of the competitive medical certificate valid on the days of the race when registering, or present it when collecting the bib. Otherwise the registration will be canceled and no refund will be due to the competitor.
For Italian athletes, only the certificate of fitness for competitive sporting activity is valid (pursuant to art.5 - Ministerial Decree 18/2/82) - yellow form - or equivalent certification for which all the diagnostic protocols envisaged for the same have been performed decree - white form.
Foreign athletes will be able to participate in the competition if already registered with their athletics federation. Art. 6 BIB WITHDRAWAL AND RACE PACKAGE
The bib and race pack collection operations will take place in Sondrio from 9 to 12 and from 14 to 19 on Wednesday and from 7 to 10.00 on Thursday 15 July.
Each bib is given individually to each competitor upon presentation of an identity document with photo, a copy of the medical certificate and a disclaimer provided by the organization at the time of bib collection, and all mandatory material.
Art. 7 DECLARATION OF LIABILITY
The disclaimer of liability must be signed by each individual athlete at the competition office in front of the organization's staff. No signed releases will be accepted.
Art. 8 COMPULSORY MATERIAL
It is mandatory to have the following material for all the duration of the race:
- camelbag or bottle cage containing at least one liter of liquids
- race bib clearly visible throughout the duration of the race
- GPS tracker that will be delivered by the organization
- survival blanket
- whistle
- mobile phone switched on with ringtone activated
- waterproof windbreaker with hood (recommended Goretex material or similar)
- long-sleeved shirt or short sleeves with sleeves
- microfleece or long sleeves equivalent
- long trousers or trousers that cover at least the knee
- hat or bandana
- gloves
- working headlamp with sufficient charge for at least 24 hours
- cup, glass or water bottle (no glasses at the refreshment points)
- adequate footwear
- Roadbook and route maps, provided by the Organization.
The required material may be worn or stored inside the race backpack.
The organizing committee reserves the right to check the obligatory material when collecting the bib, during the competition or immediately crossing the finish line.
RECOMMENDED MATERIAL:
It is recommended that you have the following material:
- waterproof pants
- energy bars or solid foods
- some money for the eventual purchase of food at the shelters
- Elastic bandage for dressings
The use of sticks is permitted.
Art. 9 MAXIMUM TIME, TIME GATES, RETREATS
The maximum time to arrive at the finish is 60 hours (by 11.00 pm on Saturday).
There is a "broom service" that will cover the track following the last competitor, in order to help the retired and avoid any injured people from being left without assistance.
Three time gates will be set up, where there will be a shuttle for returning latecomers to the arrival area (times to be confirmed, will be communicated later):
- Torre S. Maria
- Chiareggio
- Musella
- Zoia
Competitors who do not arrive within the established time limits will be stopped and must hand over their bib and GPS tracker. If anyone wants to continue, the organization will not respond in any way for any injury or any request for intervention.
To protect the health of the participants, the medical staff present at the checkpoints or along the route is authorized to stop the competitor who will not be judged suitable for the continuation of the race. In this case, the competitor must follow the instructions of the medical staff, under penalty of immediate disqualification.
Competitors who have arrived at the gates out of time, those who will be judged by medical staff as unsuitable to continue the race, and other athletes who wish to withdraw voluntarily, will be able to take advantage of a shuttle service to Chiareggio and the parking of the Zoia refuge. For logistical reasons, the withdrawn competitors may have to wait some time before being brought back to the finish area. Each competitor who withdraws from the race outside the pre-established points, must immediately communicate his withdrawal via text message or phone call to the number indicated by the organization and autonomously return to Caspoggio.
In the event that the withdrawn athlete wishes to request transport for the return outside the pre-established points, if deemed possible the organization can offer - at the athlete's expense - the service through the means available (shuttles or helicopter ).
The means of the organization, not being adequately equipped, cannot intervene in case of rescue to the athlete who needs medical attention. In that case, the intervention of the official medical aid will be required.
Art. 10 RESTAURANTS
It runs in semi-self-sufficiency with the obligation of a water supply of at least one liter. There are several refreshment points along the route:

Only competitors with clearly visible bibs have access to the refreshment point. Any accompanying persons (max 1 person) can intervene only at the BASI VITA.
Food and drinks of the refreshment must be consumed on the spot; it is forbidden to drink directly from the bottles of refreshments; waste must be thrown into the appropriate containers. At the start of every ristoro runners must have the amount of water and food necessary to get to the next refreshment point. There will be an additional liquid refreshment upon arrival; moreover, each participant can have a hot meal at the facilities set up at the arrival at the Caspoggio sports center: to access it you must show the meal voucher. For the entire duration of the competition it is possible to take advantage of the alpine refuges on the route. Any purchase of extra food or drinks in the shelters is the responsibility of the competitor.
Art. 11 ASSISTANCE DURING THE RACE
Assistance is allowed only in the life bases of the Organization. It is absolutely forbidden at any other point of the route, including partner refuges, inhabited centers or roads, on pain of immediate disqualification.
No accompaniment is allowed during the course (except the kilometer that precedes and follows the life base)
Art. 12 BAG DEPOSIT
Bags intended for the change of Chiareggio and on arrival in Caspoggio can be delivered during the bib collection phase, or starting at 11 am at the departure. Inside the facilities set up at the arrival at the Caspoggio sports center, changing rooms and bag storage will be available from 11 am on Thursday. Bags can be collected no later than midnight on Saturday, upon presentation of the race bib. It is recommended not to place valuables in the bags; in any case, the organization is not responsible for any theft, loss or damage to the bags or their contents.
Art. 13 DEPARTURE
Competitors must arrive at the start in Sondrio by 9.30. At 12.00 the start will be given.
Art. 14 ROUTE
The Bernina 100-mile route - VUT 160 K is classified with the red dot: EE itinerary for expert hikers. Itinerary that requires the ability to move on particular terrains, tracks or impervious or treacherous paths (slopes with rocky or detrital outcrops), sometimes exposed.
The VUT 160K route follows the following itinerary: Sondrio, Alpe Carnale, Alpe Mara, Dossi lisci, Alpe Rogneda, Gugiatti Sertorelli Refuge, Alpe Carnale, Val di Togno Refuge, Alpe Costa, Alpe Portola Cao, Alpe Bedoglio, Spriana, Mossini, Ronchi, Ligari, Alpe Piestorba, Alpe Poverzone, Alpe Colina, Cima Sasso Bianco, Alpe Arcoglio Superiore, Alpe Arcoglio Inferiore, Alpe Zocca, Musci, Torre Santa Maria, Ciappanico, Alpe Son, Cometti Refuge on Alpe Piasci, Bosio Refuge, Alpe Mastabbia, Alpe Lago, Alpe Pirlo, Alpe Pradaccio, Laghetti Sassersa, Passo Ventina, Refuge Ventina, Refuge Gerli Porro, Chiareggio, Alpe Fora, Refuge Longoni, Alpe Entova, Alpe Paluetto, Refuge Palù, Bocchel del Torno, Alpe Campascio, Musella Refuge and Rifugio Mitta, Vallone di Scerscen, Rifugio Marinelli, Bocchetta Forbici, Rifugio Carate, Bocchetta di Fellaria, Rifugio Bignami, Campo Moro, Rifugio Zoia, Rifugio Cà Runcasc, Rifugio Cristina, Alpe Acquanera, Piazzo Cavalli, Caspoggio.
In case of bad weather or impracticability of one or more trails, alternative routes are provided that will be presented at the pre-race briefing before departure. The kilometers are not marked. Competitors must strictly respect the indicated race course, avoiding taking shortcuts or cutting sections of the track. The removal from the official route, in addition to disqualification from the order of arrival, will take place at the sole risk and peril of the competitor.
Art. 15 SECURITY AND CONTROL
In the most significant points identified by the organization and in any case in correspondence with the refreshment points, an emergency call station is established. In the finish area there will be a rescue staff. The rescue posts are intended to provide assistance to all people in danger with the organization's own means or through affiliated organizations. Officials are authorized to suspend competitors deemed unsuitable to continue the race. Rescuers are authorized to evacuate with the means deemed suitable runners judged to be in danger. In case of necessity, for reasons that are in the interest of the rescued person, in the opinion of the organization and of the health personnel, an official rescue will be called, which will take over the direction of the operations and will implement all the appropriate means, including 'helicopter. Any costs arising from the use of exceptional vehicles (helicopter) will be borne by the rescued person according to current regulations.
A runner who appeals to a doctor or a rescuer submits himself to his authority and undertakes to respect his decisions.
Art. 16 ENVIRONMENT
The ride takes place in natural mountain environments with delicate ecosystems located in SIC and ZPS protected areas. Competitors will have to perform environmentally friendly behavior, avoiding littering, picking flowers, or harassing the fauna. Anyone surprised to abandon waste along the route will be disqualified from the race and incur any penalties under municipal regulations. To reduce the environmental impact, no glasses will be provided at refreshment points. Each competitor must bring a glass or water bottle to fill at the refreshment points.
Art. 17 WEATHER
In the event of important weather phenomena (dense fog, snowstorms, strong thunderstorms), the organization reserves the right to make changes to the route, even at the last minute or during the race, in order to eliminate potential dangers or conditions of strong discomfort for the participants. Any changes will be communicated to the participants and reported by the staff. The organization also reserves the right to suspend or cancel the race if weather conditions put the safety of the participants, volunteers, or rescuers at risk. If the race is interrupted or canceled, no refund will be due to the participants.
Art. 18 DISQUALIFICATIONS AND PENALTIES
Disqualification is scheduled, with the withdrawal of the race bib, for the following infringements:
- failure to pass through a control point
- Cutting the race course
- abandonment of waste on the route
- failure to aid a competitor in difficulty
- insults or threats to organizers or volunteers
- use of means of transport in the race
- refusal to be checked by medical staff on the route
- refusal to submit to the control of mandatory material
- no headlamp, windbreaker, thermal blanket, container for 1 liter of liquids
The disqualification can also be applied immediately on the course.
There is a 30-minute penalty for the following infractions:
- lack of whistle, GPS tracker provided by the organization, long-sleeved shirt, trousers that cover at least the knee, hat or bandana, gloves, glass or water bottle, failure to show the race bib.
The disqualification will be applied immediately, at the point where any infringement will be ascertained.
Failure to return the GPS device to the organization will result in a penalty of € 150.
Art. 19 AWARDS
There are no cash prizes.
Prizes will be awarded in kind to the first 5 men and the first 5 women. Each competitor who has completed the race within the maximum time will be given a Finisher gadget.
The awards will take place at 10pm on Saturday in Caspoggio. For no reason the prizes will be delivered in advance or shipped.
Art. 20 IMAGE RIGHTS
By enrollment, competitors authorize the organization to use free, still without limit, still and moving images that portray them during participation in the Valmalenco UltraDistance Trail event.
Art. 21 LIABILITY DECLARATION
Voluntary registration and consequent participation in the race indicate full acceptance of these regulations and any changes made. By enrollment, the participant exempts the organizers from any liability, whether civil or criminal, for damage to persons and / or property caused by him or derived from him.
Art. 22 INSURANCE
The Organizer signs a civil liability insurance valid for the entire duration of the race. This guarantees the economic consequences of its responsibility, its employees and participants.
